8/29/2023 0 Comments A timer for 50 minutes![]() ![]() So we turn to Twitter or Netflix instead to boost our mood, if only temporarily. It's uncomfortable to stare down a big task or project - one you may not be sure how to even do or one involves a lot of uncertainty. Rather, we put things off avoid negative feelings. Research has shown the procrastination has little to do laziness or lack of self-control. Here's what makes the method uniquely suited to boosting productivity: Making it easy to just get started The arbitrary silliness of using a tomato as a stand-in for units of time belies the Pomodoro Technique's serious effectiveness when it comes to helping people get things done. The Pomodoro technique is all about getting your mind in the zone to finish your tasks. If the system seems simple, that’s because it is. Keep an "Overlearning" project in Todoist with a list of tasks you can quickly choose from the next time you find yourself with pomodoro time to spare. For example, you could spend the extra time reading up on professional journals or researching networking opportunities. Use the rest of your time for overlearning, or improving skills or scope of knowledge. The rule applies even if you do finish your given task before the timer goes off. ![]() Cirillo recommends that you track interruptions (internal or external) as they occur and reflect on how to avoid them in your next session. In the event of an unavoidable disruption, take your five-minute break and start again. A digital task manager like Todoist is a great place for these, but pen and paper will do too. Any ideas, tasks, or requests that come up should be taken note of to come back to later. The pomodoro is an indivisible unit of time and can not be broken, especially not to check incoming emails, team chats, or text messages. For example, "write rent check," "set vet appointment," and "read Pomodoro article" could go together in one session. Any tasks that will take less than one Pomodoro should be combined with other simple tasks. Sticking to this rule will help ensure you make clear progress on your projects. If a task requires more than four pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller, actionable steps. The 25-minute work sprints are the core of the method, but a Pomodoro practice also includes three rules for getting the most out of each interval:īreak down complex projects. When your session ends, mark off one pomodoro and record what you completed.Īfter four pomodoros, take a longer, more restorative 15-30 minute break. Set your timer for 25 minutes, and focus on a single task until the timer rings. Though Cirillo went on to write a 130-page book about the method, its biggest strength is its simplicity: Encouraged by the challenge, he found a tomato (pomodoro in Italian) shaped kitchen timer, and the Pomodoro technique was born. ![]() ![]() Feeling overwhelmed, he asked himself to commit to just 10 minutes of focused study time. Cirillo was struggling to focus on his studies and complete assignments. The Pomodoro Technique was developed in the late 1980s by then university student Francesco Cirillo. 8/29/2023 0 Comments Equal opportunity![]() ![]() Socialism has never taken root in American soil. This belief has deep roots in American culture and American history and is part of what distinguishes our public philosophy from that of Europe. The commitment to provide everyone with a fair chance to develop their own talents to the fullest is a central tenet of the American creed. The American public has always cared more about equal opportunity than about equal results. If there is any common ground between these two views, it probably revolves around the idea of opportunity and the measures needed to insure that it exists. The other side argues that inequality reflects differences in individual talent and effort, and as such is a spur to higher economic growth, as well as just compensation for unequal effort and skill. One side argues for a redistribution of existing incomes, through higher taxes on the wealthy and more income support for the poor. Instead, we have an increasingly sterile debate over income equality. In talking about this issue, we often invoke the phrase “equal opportunity,” but we seldom reflect on what we really mean by “opportunity,” how much of it we really have, and what we should do if it’s in short supply. So the perceived fairness of the process is critical, and the rules governing who wins and who loses matter as much as the outcomes they produce. But-and this is the important point-no one could complain that they hadn’t had an equal shot at achieving a good outcome. Although some, especially those who are risk adverse, might blanch at the prospect of losing, and might wish for a more equal set of outcomes a priori (as most famously argued by John Rawls), others might welcome the chance to do exceedingly well. Imagine a society in which incomes were as unequal as they are in the United States but where everyone had an equal chance of receiving any particular income-that is, in which the game was a completely unbiased lottery. Indeed, I would argue that one cannot judge the fairness of any particular distribution without knowing something about the rules of the game that gave rise to it. It is also the system that produces that distribution. But it is not only the distribution of income that should concern us. ![]() By 1996, they had almost 20 times as much. In 1973, the richest 5 percent of all families had 11 times as much income as the poorest one-fifth. Instead, we seem mesmerized by data on the distribution of incomes which show that incomes are less evenly distributed than they were 20 or 30 years ago. America is known as “the land of opportunity.” But whether it deserves this reputation has received too little attention. ![]() 8/29/2023 0 Comments Good linkedin background photo![]() ![]() If you're not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you've signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final image. The CREATE Law became effective on 11 April 2021. However, there are taxpayers who do not file their annual income tax returns on April 15 but on another date, either earlier or later than April 15 every year. ![]() Taxpayers who are using the calendar year accounting period have already filed and paid their annual income tax returns on the said date. We are engaging in strategic litigation on retroactive changes and will review changes such as this one should it be enacted into law.By this time, the frenetic pace for the April 15 deadline for filing of the annual income tax returns (ITRs) has already simmered down. A newer Court with new justices may decide differently and more favorably to taxpayers. Supreme Court in 1995, when they last considered the issue, came close to deciding that anything beyond one year of retroactivity violates due process. Government likes retroactivity because it extracts revenue from past periods when taxpayers cannot change their behavior to avoid increased tax. Most people are shocked to learn that retroactive taxation is not only permissible under current law, but widely practiced. (This is all separate from the proposal to increase IRS enforcement funding by $80 billion.)Ī long-term goal of NTUF’s Taxpayer Defense Center is to end retroactive tax increases. The revenue estimate ominously has larger collections in the first two years, presumably from retroactive collections where the IRS attempted to impose penalties in violation of this law. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that this change will raise $1.4 billion over ten years in extra penalty collections, showing that IRS agents’ failure to get supervisory approval is hardly a small problem. Needless to say, this is a very disturbing proposal that will potentially reopen 20 years of cases that taxpayers think they have won. The bill was then adopted by overwhelming votes of 402 to 8 in the House and 96 to 2 in the Senate. NTU worked hard to add the provision after seeing the results of IRS agents going rogue with the enormous power and pressure they can use against taxpayers. The supervisor approval requirement was added as part of the IRS Restructuring & Reform Act of 1998. Instead, IRS supervisors will have to write a quarterly letter certifying that their employees are following the rules. It may sound like an easy step, but inappropriate or excessive penalties are thrown out all the time because the IRS forgot to have the supervisor approve it first.īuried on page 709 of the House Democratic tax bill released yesterday is a provision repealing this supervisor-approval requirement, retroactive to January 1, 2001. ![]() Under federal law, any tax penalty must be approved by an IRS supervisor before being assessed on a taxpayer. ![]() 8/28/2023 0 Comments Ona anime definitiion![]() ![]() This makes the experience all the more intriguing when one can’t quite pin someone down. The simple characters fit well with this style, and it’s easy to nail down their desires and motivations. Everyone is constantly at an emotional high, usually brimming with anger or sadness, and the frantic plot keeps the reader guessing as to what wild thing is going to happen next. The series works because the melodrama never stops. The thematic meat is barely there, but the events portrayed make up for it and turn the work into unexpectedly addictive junk food. This is quickly followed by the tale of a prince and an heiress who were raised on a secluded tropical island trying to avoid political assassins with help of Hong Kong street kids who work for a local Triad group. The actual events in it continue to get stranger and stranger as time goes on, starting with a first arc where suicidal depression is cured by shooting a mirror. A truly bizarre series, it comes with a baffling set-up of an oil baron setting his daughter up with a handful of possible husbands before shifting into a political thriller about the control of one of the most oil-rich nations in the world. You can look at the late ‘00s anime adaptation of the ‘80s manga Hanasakeru Seishounen for a great example of this. Melodrama can even be used to take sub-par material and make it entertaining. This results in a strong balance of thoughtful ideas and character engagement that makes the ending incredibly satisfying. Melodrama becomes central to the series’ heart and impact, refusing to let the larger themes at work steal the show entirely. It’s here, where Princess Tutu changes melodrama from something straightforward to a way to ground a more complex and meta story. Eventually, the series tips its hand and reveals a more complex narrative about storybook characters trapped by the words of a writer. The characters are also written this way, fitting into various archetypes, with main character Duck trying to become the heroine in a story she doesn’t seem to belong to. Everything runs on fairy tale logic, going in whatever direction better serves the story. The series is creative in how it allows the characters to express themselves, using both dialog and dancing as methods of communication and even debate. ![]() 2002’s Princess Tutu is a fantastic example of how to dig greater meaning from stories focused almost entirely on the emotional viewpoints of the characters. ![]() 8/28/2023 0 Comments Pearl jam unplugged video![]()
